What intrigues me most about your post is the emphasis on time-scale. It is indeed up to Nature to dictate Her pattern & yet you also note the change in that pattern. I have written elsewhere about this. Our experience of Autumn is changing. My major childhood memory is one of kicking up great piles of golden leaves while out walking with my maternal grandfather. And in my memory, the sun always shone - it was warm & wonderful.
The maple outside my window - indeed - almost all the trees around me, still wear their green. It's only up close you can see the yellowing edges on the leaves. Twenty years ago, at Mabon it would be a riot of colour out there.
